DEMAND DIVESTMENT!!

In solidarity with the grassroots resistance in Kashipur, Montreal’s Alcan’t in India collective is demanding that Alcan divest from the UAIL alumina mine and smelter project. This demand is based on :

1.The ongoing police brutality and political repression which has resulted in dozens of political prisoners, three deaths and increasing militarization in Kashipur and nearby Kalinganagar,

2.The serious environmental risks which could jeopardize the lives of tens of thousands of marginalized dalit and adivasi people, whose means of livelihood are dependant on agriculture,

3. Recognition of the right to land and self-determination of the dalit and adivasi people.

Past Actions :

- April 27, 2006

- Commemorative Vigil in front of Alcan's HQ - December 16, 2005 - Montreal, Qc., Canada

- People's Assembly at the 2005 Alcan AGM

Alcan't in India is a solidarity group based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is aimed at supporting the residents of Kashipur, India in their struggle to preserve power over the development of their land and resources. Since 1994, the people of Kashipur have resisted (and so far prevented) the establishment of a bauxite mine and alumina plant - backed in part by Montreal multinational ALCAN - on their land.

As a solidarity group we are dedicated to making the concerns of Kashipur inhabitants heard by ALCAN and the general public. We are an entirely volunteer-based grassroots group of people and have no direct affiliation with any non-governmental organizations, though we receive assistance from many concerned groups.

We are in direct contact with both local movement leaders and elected representatives in the Kashipur area and base our objectives entirely on theirs. That being said, we in no way represent the Peoples' movement, nor are we their spokespersons. We feel responsible, as Canadians living where Alcan has its headquarters, and therefore take action.

Their struggle continues. We urge you to get educated and show support by joining Alcan't in India and acting locally wherever you are.
